Who is Not a Candidate for Ultherapy?

With all the excitement generated by the non-surgical treatment for skin tightening by Ultherapy, it needs to be mentioned, that not everyone will benefit from the procedure.

San Francisco Plastic Surgeon EvaluationIt is important to be evaluated by a specially trained physician to determine if Ultherapy is a good treatment for you.

The treatment is not recommended if you have any open lesions or wounds in the treatment area or have existing keloid scars. Additionally it is not recommended if you have any dermal or mechanical implants, metal facial implants, or if you are on an anticoagulant treatment plan.

Ultherapy is not for patients with active acne. However, there are clinical trials taking place now to study the treatment of Ultherapy for atrophic acne scars.

Women who are breastfeeding or who are pregnant need to avoid Ultherapy treatments.

Do not be discouraged if you fall into any of these categories, there are other options available for skin tightening needs. You are invited to contact Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Miguel Delgado, M.D. at (415) 898-4161 or email (info@dr-delgado.com)for a skin evaluation and find out what is available to reach your goals.

Ultherapy Treats Chest Wrinkles

Ultherapy on Television…Again

Recently the television show “The Doctors” aired a video of a woman having an Ultherapy treatment that was performed 6 months previously. The woman complained of chest wrinkles due to many years of sun exposure. She said she grew tired of trying to wear clothing to cover up her chest. The video shows the area of the chest to be treated, and it is marked off. The device moves slowly over the area, and a monitor shows where the energy points are being delivered. The ultrasound technology stimulates new collagen growth. The treatment lasts only about 20 minutes, but will take several weeks to see the final results.

Skin Types for Ultherapy

Ultherapy is San Francisco

Not everyone is a candidate for Ultherapy, the non-invasive skin lifting procedure. You need to have the right skin type to have successful results. Skin tone, or the degree of firmness, is referred to as skin laxity, and is the main determining factor.

Clinical studies have shown that results of Ultherapy treatments are very consistent with significant lifting of the eyebrows and reduced sagging of the eyelids. Additionally, there is tightening and firming of the skin of the lower face and neck. However, the time it takes for the results to be evident will vary from patient to patient due to different skin types. Some patients may see some immediate improvement while others may see steady improvement over 90 days.

Depending on the amount of skin laxity a patient has will determine if the patient will need more than one treatment and if maintenance treatments will be needed in the future. Ultherapy is a non-invasive treatment and will not stop the aging process, but will do a lot to turn the clock back and slow it down.

The skin will age due to different factors, such as; environmental exposure, muscle tone, gravity, and genetics.

• Youthful skin is found on children through young adults into their 20’s.
• Skin with mild laxity the first sign of aging usually shows up around the eyes, the forehead and the neck.
• Moderate skin laxity looser skin in the crow’s feet and neck and responds well to Ultherapy
• Extremely lax and sagging skin is found in patients well into their 70’s although earlier for patients that smoke, have had a lot of sun exposure, or a lot of time on tanning beds and/or a poor diet. These patients will not be good candidates for Ultherapy as the level of stretching of the skin makes it unable to tighten up with the creation of collagen.

Is Ultherapy Painful?

Ultherapy in San Francisco
The level of discomfort from Ultherapy varies from patient to patient. Pain thresholds can range from no pain at all to very uncomfortable for some. The thickness of skin seems to be a factor; those with thicker skin seem to be less sensitive than those with thin skin. Different areas of the face seem to be more sensitive such as the bony prominences like the forehead, around the eyes, and mouth. The neck region seems to tolerate treatment the best.

Ultherapy delivers heat energy to muscle to stimulate collagen production in the deeper dermal and sub-dermal levels of the skin; this is what gives the lifting and tightening effect. However, the heat is what can make the treatment uncomfortable. The discomfort ends as soon as the treatment is completed, but your face may feel sunburned for several days after.

Miguel Delgado, M.D. wants his patients to be as comfortable as possible and enjoy the benefits of Ultherapy. There is not a single pain management option appropriate for all patients. For some, ibuprofen is all that is needed to take the edge off, for others stronger medication may be warranted, and/or topical lidocaine.

If you are considering Ultherapy for rejuvenating your face, call today (415 898-4161) to meet with Miguel Delgado, M.D. who will determine if you are a candidate.

What Other Areas of the Body Can be Treated With Ultherapy?

Ultherapy Tightens the Skin!

There is a lot of excitement over the results of Ultherapy for the brow, face, neck and now the decollete, which is FDA approved. Being able to strengthen the skin from the inside out, it is hard not to imagine using the tightening abilities of the device for other areas of the body; anywhere skin needs to be tightened!

Off-label Use

With varying degrees of success, many doctors have been using Ultherapy off-label. Off-label means the use of a drug or medical device for purposes other than what it was approved for by the FDA. It is not illegal for physicians to do this, different applications are allowed at the doctor’s discretion. It is, however, illegal for the manufacturing company to market their product for anything other than what it was approved for.

There has been quite a buzz about new areas being treated with great success “off-label.” These areas include; the “wiggle” under the arms, the wrinkles on the abdomen around the belly button, and softening the lines above the knees.

Clinical Trials

There are clinical trials taking place now for many new areas. In the meantime if you have an area of loose skin that is bothering you, call today (415 898-4161) for a consultation with Miguel Delgado, M.D. to see if Ultherapy might be a possible treatment for you!

Can You Have Ultherapy if You Have Had Fat Transfers to the Face?

★★★★★ Ratings: 4.74 -118 Reviews

Choosing Facial Rejuvenation Procedures

There are many exciting new procedures available that can treat an amazing array of conditions; from sun damage, aging, including fine lines and wrinkles. There is a variety of fillers, lasers, and skin tightening treatments.

Miguel Delgado, M.D. states that today patients are quite educated on what is available, they learn from the internet, the media and their friends. It has always been his goal to have available to his patients the most up to date procedures that technology offers. Miguel Delgado, M.D. will research extensively the latest and greatest before making it available to his patients so that they can be assured that all available procedures at his Marin County office are safe and effective.

Combining Procedures

It is common for his patients to ask if there are any adverse effects when combining procedures or scheduling them close together, and the answer is that sometimes they should not be combined.

Centrifuged fat

Centrifuged Fat

One of the most popular non-surgical procedures offered by Miguel Delgado, M.D. is Ultherapy, the skin tightening treatment for wrinkles and fine lines. Another exciting procedure that is available to Miguel Delgado’s patients is fat transfers to the face. This procedure fills in areas that have lost fullness due to aging or weight loss. The success of this procedure has been excellent, with results lasting even longer than most other fillers. It is not surprising that patients want to know if they can do both. The answer is yes, but with conditions.

Ultherapy and Then Fat Transfers

There hasn’t been any data yet to support the possibility that Ultherapy may cause diminished facial volume, but it is something to consider. Careful application of Ultherapy can avoid or minimize volume loss as Ultherapy allows the ability to visualize the layer to be treated. It is possible to avoid the fat transfers. However, that may mean having to skip areas that some lifting would be beneficial.

It would be best to have Ultherapy done first and then fat transfers. If the patient has already had fat transfers and desires Ultherapy, then it still can be done but might be advantageous to wait about six months allowing the fat to get a good blood source.

Ultherapy is for Men Too!

Facial Rejuvenation for Men

According to the new statistics published by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), 298,223 skin tightening procedures were performed in 2014, and many of them were for men.

Before and After Ultherapy

Before and After Ultherapy Treatment

Ultherapy is a great procedure for men who do not want to have surgery or wish to delay having a facelift for a few years. Men with mild to moderate skin laxity may be excellent candidates for Ultherapy. Ultherapy uses ultrasound energy to lift and tighten the skin naturally without surgery or downtime, usually in 1 to 2 hours depending on the areas to be treated.

Ultherapy for a Natural Look

Ultherapy is not as dramatic as facelift surgery. Men who want a more subtle improvement and can’t schedule time out for a long recovery, may find it to be the perfect treatment to counteract the effects of gravity and aging. In some cases, Ultherapy may be combined with some liposuction of the neck and chin if the patient has good skin elasticity.

Men are as susceptible as women to the effects of aging, but men have fewer options for hiding the surgical scars from a facelift. It is easier for women to hide scars that are behind the ears with different hairstyles or longer hair. However, Miguel Delgado, M.D. has had great success in hiding incisions for men that do choose to have a facelift. In addition, Ultherapy has proven to be a great treatment to extend the benefits of facelift surgery.

Can You be too Young for Ultherapy?

Miguel Delgado, M.D.

Criteria for Ultherapy Treatment

Age is not the defining factor for whatever facial treatments are recommended. It is highly advisable that you be evaluated by a qualified professional.

Miguel Delgado, M.D. states that some people start to get sagging skin in their late 20’s. Treatment options are based on the analysis of the face, not your age. There are many variables to be considered that can create different levels of the aging process from one person to another. For example, genetics plays an important factor, as does the amount of sun exposure one has had, whether or not you are or have been a smoker and the type of skin you have.

What to Look For

Usually the first sign of maturing skin is a lowered eyebrow line, when younger patients notice this, they may want to take action now instead of waiting. Ultherapy may be considered an optimal treatment once the skin starts to relax. The younger patient is still producing their own collagen, so their treatment would be more preventative than corrective. For some, it may be advantageous to start building collagen early on instead of waiting for a lot of facial sagging.

Should I be at Goal Weight Before Ultherapy Treatment?

★★★★★ Ratings: 4.74 -118 Reviews

Ultherapy is an increasingly popular alternative to facelift surgery. For patients with mild to moderate loose skin, a non-surgical approach has a lot of appeal. Ultherapy has almost no downtime for recovery, and natural results start appearing within a few weeks as new collagen starts to be produced.

Patients have asked Dr. Delgado if they need to be at their goal weight before having Ultherapy treatments. The answer is actually the same for the patient that is having a surgical facelift.

If the amount of weight loss is only to be about 5 to 10 pounds after either procedure, it probably will not affect the final outcome. However, should the patient be looking at losing 20 pounds or more, it would be better to lose the weight first. When patients lose weight, it is not unusual to lose weight in the face. You have fat cells all over your body, and you can’t pick and choose where the weight will come off. Losing fat from the face may leave loose skin behind. Some patients choose to have the fat loss replenished will fillers or fat injections. This is an option and should be discussed with your Board Certified Plastic Surgeon.

Before and After Ultherapy

The patient that loses a lot of weight may find that the amount of loose skin is more than Ultherapy will be able to correct. A full facelift will be able to tighten the skin of the neck and lower face dramatically. Ultherapy may be a future choice for refreshing the face as it continues to age.

How Many Ultherapy Treatments are Needed?

Miguel A. Delgado, M.D., Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon

★★★★★ Ratings: 4.74 -118 Reviews
Ultrasound is what Ultherapy uses to lift and tone loose skin. Ultrasound targets the deep foundation below the skin, as in a facelift. This is the only non-surgical treatment to do so. Ultherapy is the only non-surgical procedure cleared by the FDA to actually lift the skin and to treat the face at this deeper level.

As the most effective non-invasive treatment for facial rejuvenation, many San Francisco patients ask Dr. Delgado how many treatments will be needed. The good news is most patients will only require one treatment. Many of the other non-surgical skin tightening procedures require a series of treatments.

Before and After 90 Days

As stated most patients only require one treatment but depending on the amount of laxity a patient’s skin has and how their body’s response is to Ultrasound for building collagen, they may opt for an additional treatment.

Dr. Delgado recommends that his patients read reviews by patients on RealSelf.com for unbiased opinions of their treatments.
